If you're in the business of writing and colonial desire and the poetics of eroticismreading the internet, you may have noticed a lot of Game of Thronespromotion -- none of which is new footage of Season 7. That footage -- any footage -- is now officially overdue.
For now, we feed on scraps: From melting ice to a creepy Vine, our HBO overlords seem intent to remind Game of Thronesfans that the show exists and is returning ... without giving us an actual trailer to really get the hype train going.
SEE ALSO: Marvel's 'Inhumans' teaser trailer is definitely channeling 'Game of Thrones'In March, as anxiety about the Season 7 premiere reached a breaking point (melting point?), HBO planned a promotion to announce the release date. The date would be encased in a block of ice and fans would melt it via Facebook live. The melting was a literal meltdown, but it got us a date announcement...and no new footage.
With the date announcement freshly dripping water onto the floor, HBO released a quick teaser: "Sigils," which contains a lot of artistic footage and concept art before zooming out to reveal the eye of a White Walker. Some of the quotes were new, and the production design impressive -- but still, no footage.
"Long Walk," the first semblance of a proper Season 7 teaser, shows characters walking toward the Iron Throne. This isn't actual Season 7 footage unless they literally all ascend the Throne in turns -- which, in all honesty, could happen.
The first official Season 7 photos were admittedly a major breakthrough. Jon in the crypts! Jaime with Widow's Wail! Arya in clean clothes! A trailer was surely on its way to string these tantalizing pieces together.
Entertainment Weeklyexclusively debuted several new photos, including the thrilling promise of more dragon battle and some behind-the-scenes shots.
To hammer home the threat of White Walkers, HBO released another teaser that ends by zooming out to show one of the terrifying creatures' piercingly white eyes. The 13-second video also gives us a glimpse of Jon Snow, who looks anything but safe in his current position.
It's exactly around this time in 2016 that the Game of Thrones Season 6 trailer debuted -- not May, but March, about a month and a half before the show's April premiere. The trailer released 56 days before the premiere, to be exact, and we're currently 54 days out from Season 7's July 16 release (but who's counting).
With any luck, the trailer will be released any moment and render everything here obsolete. But even if it does, it's overdue -- and we'll welcome it with open arms.
