Hall is perhaps most known for playing the lead role on serial killer drama Dexter,but he's starred in Bowie's musical Lazarus, on Broadway and in London.

Lazarus-- written by Bowie and Enda Walsh -- tells the story of an alien to falls to Earth in order to save his home planet.

"If David Bowie could be here tonight ... he probably wouldn't be here tonight," Hall said, in collecting the award on behalf of Bowie's family.

It's true. If Bowie turned down the chance to be knighted by the Queen, perhaps the rebel wouldn't have bothered to collect an award.

Hall's speech was lovely, though. "His daring, whose ever expanding artistic vitality simultaneously soothes us, sears us and astonishes us," he said.
