"This instinct to humiliate when it's modeled by someone in a public platform, it filters down into everybody's life because it gives permission for others to do the same," the actress said, "Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence."

The powerful speech inspired a range of reactions across social media, and resulted in a captivating Twitter feud between Fox Newspersonality and daughter of Republican Sen. John McCain, Meghan McCain, and Billy on the Street and Difficult People star, Billy Eichner.

Eichner publicly praised Streep for utilizing her platform to make a political statement.
