Ser Davos has formed quite the partnership with the King of the North, Jon Snow, but it wasn't that long ago that the smuggler-turned-knight served as Stannis Baratheon's Hand.
SEE ALSO: Maisie Williams tweets Sophie Turner the best reaction to that 'Game of Thrones' episodeWhile his stint with the Baratheons ended bitterly, Davos' time with them wasn't spent in vain. He learned how to read from Princess Shireen, became more knowledgeable on the art of war, and -- perhaps most importantly -- mastered the use of "less" and "fewer."
Stannis was a stickler for grammar. In one of the self-proclaimed king's more amusing moments, he corrects Davos on his misuse of the world 'less.'
Via GiphyIt would seem that Stannis' attention to grammatical detail paid off.
During last night's episode of Game of Thrones, Jon and Davos were walking and talking about the plight of the Northern army.
"How many men do we have in the North to fight him? 10,000? Less?" says Jon.
Davos quickly responds, "Fewer."
Correct, Davos!
The word "less" is used when referring to singular nouns that can't be counted. For example: The Lannisters had less goldthan the Tyrells until the Lannister army sacked Highgarden and took the Tyrell fortune to pay back the Iron Bank.
"Fewer" is used when referring to countable things. An example of this is: The Northern army has fewer than 10,000 menand therefore, Jon needs to bend the knee to Daenerys.
